Working Holiday Visas

Australia’s Working Holiday Visas were a government initiative that started back in January 1975 to introduce Australia’s cultures to people from around the world. The Working Holiday Visas have existed in different forms, but are currently known as The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 462 and The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 417.

These ‘work-on-the-go’ visas are aimed at individuals ages 18 to 30 years old (or 35 for Irish, Canadian and French passport holders). They are a dream come true for many young adults who desire to experience exciting new adventures while making the money to do so.

With Australia’s Working Holiday Visas, you can travel anywhere in Australia for up to 12 months and work for any employer (except directly for the governments). The work must be temporary and ‘incidental’ to travel. You will be entitled to the same pay and work conditions as Australian permanent residents and Australian citizens.

The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 462

The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 462 is the first Working Holiday Visa you will need to start your adventures in the Land Down Under. Using this visa, you can do short-term work in Australia, study for up to 4 months, and travel in and out of Australia as you wish.

To apply for The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 462, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have a passport from an eligible country (see below)
  • You must be 18 to 30 years old (or 35 if you hold Irish, Canadian or French passports)
  • You must apply from outside of Australia
  • You must meet education requirements
  • You must meet language requirements
  • You must have a letter of support
  • You must have sustainable funds
  • You must meet health and character requirements
  • You must not have a dependent child
  • You must not have previously held the Subclass 462 or Subclass 417 visas

You must enter Australia within 12 months of receiving your visa to activate it. This time-frame is not flexible.

The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 417

The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 417, otherwise known as the “Second Working Holiday Visa”, is the visa you need to work and travel in Australia for another 12 months. With this visa, the same conditions apply: you can do short-term work to pay for your travels, study up to 4 months, and travel in and out of Australia as many times as you wish.

To apply for The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 417, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are 18 to 30 years old (if you turn 31 after you apply and before a decision was made, you might still obtain this visa)
  • You have a passport from an eligible country (see below)
  • You have previously entered Australia using The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 462
  • You completed 3 months of specified work in regional Australia using The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 462
  • You have sustainable funds
  • You must meet health and character requirements
  • You must not have a dependent child

If you have already used the first and second Working Holiday Visas and you are interested in extending your stay in Australia for another year, you now have a third Working Holiday Visa option.

This is simply called The Third Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462). Just like the previous Working Holiday Visas, you can do short-term work to pay for your travels, study up to 4 months and travel in and out of Australia as many times as you would like.

To apply for this visa, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You must have a passport from an eligible country (see below)
  • You are 18 to 30 years old (if you turn 31 after you apply and before a decision was made, you might still obtain this visa)
  • You must have previously entered Australia using The Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 417 or a bridging visa that came into effect when the Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 417 expired
  • You completed 6 months of specified work in regional Australia using the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) Program
  • You must have sustainable funds
  • You must meet health and character requirements
