General Skilled Migration Visas

The General Skilled Migration program is one of the most popular Australian immigration programs, aimed at skilled individuals and their families who want to work in Australia with a pathway to permanent residency.

The General Skilled Migration program includes 4 types of visas: Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189, Skilled Nominated Visa – Subclass 190, Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 491 and the Skilled Regional – Subclass 887.

The Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189

The Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189 is a long-term work visa that can lead to permanent residency. Invited workers and New Zealand citizens with in-demand skills will be able to live, work and study in Australia permanently. This visa is divided into two streams: The Points-Tested Stream and The New Zealand Stream.

To apply for the Points-Tested Stream, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be invited to apply
  • You must be under 45 years old (however, you can still apply for this visa if you turn 45 after you were invited to apply)
  • You must pass a skills assessment
  • You must score 65 points or more under SkillSelect
  • You must meet language requirements
  • You must meet health and character requirements

To apply for the New Zealand Stream, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must hold a New Zealand Special Category – Subclass 444 Visa
  • You must meet the income requirements
  • You must have lived in Australia for 5 years
  • You must meet the health and character requirements

If you are in Australia, you will become a permanent resident on the day you receive the Points-Tested Visa Stream or the New Zealand Visa Stream, or once you enter Australia from outside. If eligible, you can later apply for Australian citizenship.


The Skilled Nominated Visa – Subclass 190

The Skilled Nominated Visa – Subclass 190 is a long-term work visa that can lead to permanent residency. Skilled workers who are nominated by a State or Territory can come to legally live, work and study in Australia permanently.

To apply for the Skilled Nominated Visa – Subclass 190, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be invited to apply
  • You must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency
  • You must be under 45 years old (however, you can still apply for this visa if you turn 45 after you were invited to apply)
  • You must pass a skills assessment
  • You must score 65 points or more in the SkillSelect system
  • You must meet language requirements
  • You must meet health and character requirements

If you are in Australia, you will become a permanent resident on the day you receive The Skilled Nominated Visa, or once you enter Australia from outside. If eligible, you can later apply for Australian citizenship.


The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 491

The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 491 is a temporary work visa that can lead to permanent residency. This visa is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia (such as the Northern Territory, Queensland, and South Australia).

To apply for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 491, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be invited to apply
  • You must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency, or show that you will be sponsored by an eligible relative
  • You must be under 45 years old (however, you can still apply for this visa if you turn 45 after you were invited to apply)
  • You must pass a skills assessment
  • You must score 65 points or more in the SkillSelect system
  • You must meet language requirements
  • You must meet health and character requirements

This visa is valid for 5 years. If eligible, you may apply for permanent residency through the Skilled Regional Visa – Subclass 191, which is intended to become available on 16 November 2022.

If you are a family member of someone who already holds the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 491, you can apply for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subsequent Entrant. This visa will be valid for as long as your family members’ visa is valid.


The Skilled Regional – Subclass 887 Visa

The Skilled Regional – Subclass 887 Visa is a permanent residency visa for workers who previously held other work visas, such as the Skilled Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 489 visa,
and have lived and worked in specified areas of regional Australia.

To apply for the Skilled Regional – Subclass 887 Visa you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be in Australia when applying for this visa
  • You must be in Australia on a Subclass 489, 495, 496, 475 and 487 visas
    OR
  • On a bridging visa A or bridging visa B after applying for the Subclass 489, 495 or 487 visas
  • You must meet the residency requirement
  • You must meet the work requirement
  • You must comply with the conditions of your eligible visa
  • You must meet language requirements
  • You must meet health and character requirements

If you are in Australia, you will become a permanent resident the day you are granted this visa. You may also later apply for Australian citizenship if eligible.
